Yellow had never really appealed to me as a nail shade before, in fact I’d go as far to say that I really disliked the idea. That’s until fairly recently, when the new pastel-yellow BioSculpture shade made it onto my fingers and toes. That was when it dawned that yellow can be a happy, summery colour to make you smile – if the shade and formula is right!
In France recently, I picked up a miniature bottle of Bourjois polish in a similar yellow shade, from their Vacances a Hawaii range (I don’t think this is available in the UK at present). The pastel yellow shade in the bottle looked really appealing and although I’ve not used Bourjois polish before, their cosmetics are usually great so I was looking forward to trying it out. Unfortunately, it was a complete disappointment….
Firstly the shade comes out much brighter than it appears in the bottle, which looked a bit tacky to be honest. Secondly, the formula was pretty poor – the first coat was so streaky and the second wasn’t much better. It may have looked better with three, but really who expects to have to do three coats of colour, plus a base and top coat nowadays? The finish was slightly odd too, it’s hard to explain but it looked more matte than normal polish would, without actually being a matte polish – more like general emulsion paint! The top coat rescued it a bit, but it couldn’t hide the streaky patches, or the fact that despite leaving nearly half an hour between coats, it still bubbled. From a distance it was passable, close up it was not good.
Its saving grace was that it didn’t chip as much as expected, it was still going strong two days later, with just a minor bit of tip wear. However, by that point I disliked it so much I removed it. Perhaps I got a bad batch, or are all Bourjois nail polishes this disappointing? Do let me know what you think!
