Debenhams put out a release this morning stating that their Typhoon shopping trolleys are becoming incredibly popular, and sales are in fact “soaring”. They say that having been inundated with requests for stylish versions of the Granny’s favourite, they decided to create something that even the high-end Fashionista would be happy to be seen wheeling around.
Alice Duggan, Debenhams Head of Home Buying says; “After being inundated with requests to stock fashion focussed ‘granny shoppers’, we have introduced a range of colourful and chic trolleys that any stylista would happily wheel around.
“The range makes shopping trolleys look more Fearne Cotton than Dot Cotton, Granny chic has reached a whole new level.”
So this leads us to the question, where does practicality come into fashion? Because we’re not going to lie, we don’t like them! We can completely see how much easier they’d make life, especially as Debenhams say the trolleys are particularly popular in London and other cities where less people own cars. However, having watched our Nan wheel one around for years, it’s just too ingrained in us that these are NOT en Vogue, that we don’t think we’ll change our minds in a hurry.
Don’t get us wrong, the designs aren’t as Granniesque as the ones our Nan’s/Gran’s have had over the years, they look a lot more lightweight and some of the prints are actually bearable, although that’s as far as we’ll go – we don’t think they’re pretty or fashionable enough to detract from what they actually are!
Another reason we’re not fans of this “trend” is for the sake of our ankles. We all know that there are some people out there who struggle to walk around with handbags and not bash into you, and don’t get us started on trolley rage and the amount of times we’ve come close to losing a toe to someone irresponsible in charge of a set of wheels! These shoppers are just asking to clog up the aisles of our favourite department stores and cause shopping injuries galore!
Oh and there’s the price, the Typhoon range retails at £60 each. We’ll just stick to buying a decent sized tote and continue carrying our shopping until we can’t any more, then and only then, would we consider investing in one of these….
